Once the gateway into the town from the harbour, it is now the main entrance into the archaeological site. The steep slope must have made this a somewhat difficult climb but it was the only way of linking the harbour to the Forum.
The gate itself is incorporated into a tower with two arched passageways: one was served by stairs for pedestrians while the other was both wider and higher and was used by carts and wagons. The tunnel itself has a single barrel vault which opens out onto Via Marina and runs alongside the Temple of Venus.
