The Tower of Mercury

Regio VI   Insula

From the top of this tower we can see the ruins of Pompeii from their highest point. This is one of the towers that were built into the town walls after the 3rd century as a vantage point from which to observe the whole town.

In addition to the ground floor, it has two upper floors and a large embattled terrace from which patrols would set out for their rounds along the walls. The imprints left by the round stones hurled at the town by the catapults of Silla's army (90 B.C.) are still visible on the wall between the Porta Ercolano and the Porta Vesuvio gates. Two additional towers were later added to this section of the town walls.
