The Vesuvius for the Pompeians

The eruption of 79 AD profoundly modified the original shape of the #Vesuvius crater. The volcanic cone, from the lush slopes, collapsed creating a crater with a perimeter of 11 km, now known as Monte Somma, 1132 meters high.

Inside, a new volcanic cone was formed, 1277 meters high, which represents the current image of Vesuvius. In the twelve centuries after the destruction of Pompeii, Vesuvius had eleven eruptions. The one in 1139 was particularly violent.

In Roman times, at the beginning of the first millennium, Vesuvius was not considered an active #volcano but a simple mountain covered with luxuriant vegetation thanks to the beauty and fertility of the places.

Already In 62 AD the Vesuvian area was hit by a strong earthquake that caused the collapse of many buildings in the district despite this at the time it was not assumed any relationship between the #earthquake and the volcanic nature of the area.

On 24 August of the year 79 AD Vesuvius returned to activity after a period of quiet probably lasting about eight centuries, pouring on the surrounding areas, in little more than thirty hours, about 4 cubic km of magma in the form of pumice and incandescent ash.

The eruption began around one in the afternoon of 24 August with the opening of the conduit following a series of explosions caused by the volatilization of the water of the surface water table coming into contact with the magma in rapid ascent. Subsequently, a column of gas, ashes, pumice and lithic fragments rose about 15 km above the volcano.

This phase of the eruption lasted until about eight o'clock the next morning, and was accompanied by frequent earthquakes. Taking advantage of an apparent pause in the eruptive activity, in the night many people returned to their homes unattended. But they were surprised in the morning by the resumption of the volcano activity during which the complete collapse of the eruptive column occurred, which determined the formation of pyroclastic flows that caused the total destruction of the area around Pompeii, #Herculaneum and #Stabia.

In the final part of the eruption, which took place in the late morning of 25 August, pyroclastic flows continued to form, whose deposits definitively buried the surrounding cities, while a dense ash cloud dispersed in the atmosphere until it reached Capo Miseno.

In the following centuries the eruptions became more rare and in the XIV century there was a long period of stasis, during which the volcano was covered with vegetation. In the last decades of 1500 there were several earthquakes, almost an omen of the catastrophic eruption of December 16, 1631. This eruption was almost equal to that of 79 AD, and caused about 4,000 deaths.

Other violent eruptions followed, as in 1707, on the occasion of the settlement of the Austrian garrison in Naples, and in 1794 when Torre del Greco was destroyed. Other significant eruptions occurred between 1895 and 1899. Then there were the eruptions of 1906 and 1944 whose sad memory is still alive in the memory of the populations that inhabit the municipalities of the Vesuvian territory.

In Herculaneum, near the top of the crater, the Vesuvian Observatory was built in 1845. It is a scientific structure that has under constant observation the activity, certainly not dormant, of Vesuvius. Its vitality is manifested by the fumaroles visible inside the crater and by a modest seismic activity.
